Horses are high-strung animals with strong “fight or flight” instincts.
Under no circumstances can the slaughter process be made humane for horses.
Efficiently stunning these animals with one blow is nearly impossible. Even after multiple blows, they may still be conscious during slaughter. This was the reality when USDA-inspected slaughter-houses operated in the U.S. Americans view wild horses and burros as national symbols of freedom, not a “protein source” to feed people overseas. In fact, 80 percent of Americans, including 83 percent of Westerners oppose the cruel practice of horse slaughter.
The dangers posed by the horse slaughter industry not only affect horses, but they also threaten humans. Meat from American horses is dangerous to consumers because the animals may have been provided drugs that are known to be toxic to people, and for that reason are specifically banned by the Food and Drug Administration for human consumption.
We urge you to join the 80 percent of American voters who oppose the slaughter of our precious horses for profit. Please ask your representatives to co-sponsor SAFE Act which will ban the slaughter of our nation’s horses in the U.S. for human consumption and stop them from being shipped across our borders for slaughter. Stand with our nation’s horses and contact your representatives! Urge them to co-sponsor Safeguard American Food Exports Act NOW!
