If you have fostered or adopted a dog from ISWMP, then you know how much we love Martingale collars. In fact, we insist that our fosters and adopters use them and even provide a custom ISWMP Martingale collar to all of our dogs. But why do we prefer this type of collar and why should you use one for your dog? Read on to learn how Martingale collars are superior to regular collars and why these collars are becoming the top choice for discerning dog lovers.
What is a Martingale Collar?
Martingale collars are designed to prevent a dog from slipping out of their collar. Unlike traditional collars that have to be buckled uncomfortably tight to prevent escape, these collars are comfortable around the neck until engaged. Adjusted properly, they contract snugly to prevent escape when needed. Martingales are similar to a choke collar in that they do tighten when they are pulled on, however, unlike a choke collar, there is a maximum tightness that a martingale can reach; properly fitted, a martingale will never choke the dog and the dog won’t be able to slip out. A martingale collar is made with two loops; the larger loop is slipped onto the dog’s neck and a leash is then clipped to the D-ring on the smaller loop. When the dog tries to pull, the tension on the leash pulls the small loop taut, which makes the large loop smaller and tighter on the neck, thus preventing escape.

Okay, So Why Should I Use One?
Because They Are Gentler!
Martingale collars are designed to provide gentle and even pressure around a dog’s neck, avoiding the potential harm caused by traditional collars that may strain the neck and trachea. The controlled pressure of a Martingale collar helps prevent injury while offering you greater control, making it easier to guide and train your dog. Regular collars can pose a risk to a dog’s trachea, especially if they pull or lunge while on a walk. Martingale collars distribute pressure evenly, reducing the likelihood of tracheal damage and offering a safer alternative for dogs that may be prone to respiratory issues. Martingale collars serve as effective training aids, promoting positive behaviors without resorting to harsh methods. By gently guiding your dog’s attention back to you, these collars facilitate communication during training sessions. This is particularly beneficial for rescue dogs undergoing behavioral rehabilitation, helping them build trust and confidence while learning essential commands.
And They Are Safer!
A dog that can back out of its collar is a danger to itself and others. New dog owners may not have the experience to know the importance of preventing their furry friends from slipping out of their collars, especially if the dog is frightened or anxious. A flat collar can easily slip off of a squirming dog’s head, but a properly fitted martingale cannot be backed out of like a traditional collar. Martingale collars feature a limited closure that tightens gently when the dog pulls, reducing the risk of escape without causing discomfort or injury. This unique design is particularly advantageous for dogs with heads that are smaller than their necks like Greyhounds and Great Danes, but they are the safest choice for dogs of all breeds.

When it comes to the well-being of our dogs, every detail matters, and while choosing a fancy collar for your new dog is fun and exciting, safety must always be the top priority. Martingale collars stand out as a compassionate and practical choice, offering a combination of safety, control, and comfort – and they come in all sorts of designs and colors just like traditional collars! By understanding the benefits of Martingale collars over traditional options, we hope you will make informed decisions that prioritize the happiness and health of your four-legged friend.
