Zuko is a 1-year-old Australian Shepherd with a gorgeous caramel, tan, and white coat and golden eyes. He came to the Downey shelter with his sister as an owner surrender after his family moved out of state and couldn’t bring the dogs along. In his past life, Zuko spent most of his time outdoors in the backyard, but now that he’s in a loving foster home, he is blossoming into the dog he was always meant to be.

Zuko is a happy, playful, and affectionate young guy who is quickly adjusting to life as a true family companion. True to his breed, he thrives on activity and purpose — he loves herding, engaging with games, and any kind of stimulation that challenges his sharp mind. He is incredibly smart, eager to learn, and responds beautifully to training. His recall is exceptional, and he is already showing progress with potty training after never having had the chance in his prior life.

He is wonderful with children, enjoys the company of other dogs, and would also thrive as a solo pup as long as his family is committed to giving him the time, exercise, and enrichment he needs. Like many Aussies, he can have a high-pitched bark when meeting new people or feeling uncertain, but with gentle training and exposure, he is quickly gaining confidence and settling into his social side.

Zuko’s ideal forever home is one that understands the needs of a young working breed — an active family or individual who can offer him structure, training, and plenty of playtime. In return, he will offer boundless loyalty, joy, and affection. Zuko is ready to share his love and energy with a family who will give him the fulfilling life he so deeply deserves.
